The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are known for their innovation and developments. And continuing the name, two IITs are set to create yet another history. IIT Indore and IIT Hyderabad have collaborated to create geogrids. The geogrids are geosynthetic material which is used to reinforce soil and other construction materials. The geogrids are inspired by the architecture of one of the wonders of the world, Taj Mahal and the natural patterns found in the Indian star tortoise.

The aim of this innovation is to deal with climate change concerns while at the same time contributing to sustainable infrastructure. The two versions namely Multiaxial Diamond Anchored Octagonal Geogrid (MDAOG) and Multiaxial Concentric Octagonal Geogrid (MCOG) are created to strengthen sustainable and eco-friendly construction, specifically for flexible pavements like highways. The patterns and designs are not ordinary, they’re well thought , well researched inspired from the architecture of the Taj Mahal and the intricate patterns in shell of the Indian star tortoise. The mix and match of ancient design and modern science brings a new perspective , how beautifully can nature and human ingenuity work together to find solution to modern problems.

As Prof Suhas Joshi, Director of IIT Indore, pointed out, “This technological development aligns with the nation’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially in creating innovative, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure.”

The sustainable creation has wide range of application, it includes reinforcing airport runways and railway tracks, supporting tunnel construction and even can help preventing soil erosion. They play a significant role in bridges, embarkment, riverbank protection, and bridge abutments , showcasing the significance of civil engineering projects whose goal is to combat the effects of climate change

It is developed by a research team, which includes Dr Baadiga Ramu of IIT Indore and Prof Umashankar Balunaini of IIT Hyderabad, these geogrids provide a promising solution for enhancing infrastructure resilience while promoting sustainability.
