Education Minister Bratya Basu of West Bengal has said that all state-run colleges will use a centralized admissions process for undergraduate programs. The purpose of this new system is to expedite the admissions process and avoid having students take up several seats.

Commencing on June 24, a unified website will handle the undergraduate admissions process for West Bengal's state-run colleges. This action aims to guarantee equitable seat distribution among students and streamline the application procedure.

Minister Bratya Basu emphasized that the issue of students with high grades taking multiple seats in several colleges would be resolved by the new method.

"One candidate will be offered only one seat at a time based on their results, with the opportunity to get a better option if vacancies arise elsewhere," he said. This guarantees that seats don't go unoccupied for too long.

The new system's functionality

Through the new website, students who passed their class 12 final exams can apply to up to 25 undergraduate courses. The technology will create the admissions merit list, guaranteeing an open and effective selection procedure.

Notably, elite establishments like Presidency University, Jadavpur University, and certain autonomous and minority colleges would not be subject to the centralized admission system. These colleges will stick to their current admissions procedures.

"We are launching the portal to give students a single window system to choose their desired courses in chosen colleges," said Basu. The goal of this project is to improve the accessibility and convenience of the admissions process for students around the nation and state.

Comments on other issues

Speaking to yet another important issue, Basu stated that numerous colleges have already started the process of filling open teacher-in-charge jobs. It is anticipated that this action will increase the administrative effectiveness of the state's educational establishments.
