UGC introduces updated curriculum and credit system for postgraduate programs

In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has created a curriculum and credit framework for Postgraduate (PG) programs. NEP 2020 recommends restructuring PG education to offer various options, such as one-year PG programs, two-year PG programs, PG diplomas, and an exit option after the first year of a two-year program.

The UGC has introduced a new curriculum and credit framework for postgraduate programs, emphasizing flexibility and mobility. Unlike previous standards, the new framework does not require discipline-specific prerequisites for entry into one-year or two-year PG programs. It also allows students in the two-year program to opt out after the first year.

This initiative aims to restructure postgraduate education, offering students more freedom and choice in their academic paths. It defines the credit system and curriculum content for both program durations, with an exit option after the first year for two-year programs.

"The framework, which has no discipline-specific entry requirements, outlines the credits and academic structure for both one-year and two-year PG programs, providing an exit option after the first year in the two-year program. Flexibility and mobility are its key features," stated UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar.

The framework aligns with NEP 2020, encouraging universities to develop restructured degree programs that offer flexibility similar to undergraduate education.

 Multiple Strategies for Postgraduate Education:

1. A two-year program focused on research for graduates of three-year Bachelor's programs.

2. A one-year PG program for those completing four-year Bachelor's programs with honors or research.

3. Integrated five-year Bachelor's/Master's programs.

4. PG programs in core disciplines like Machine Learning and multidisciplinary fields are encouraged.

Key Aspects of the PG Curriculum Framework Include:

1. Ability to change disciplines of study.

2. Options for undergraduates with majors and minors to select majors, minors, or other subjects based on competence.

3. Opportunity for learners to choose courses they find interesting.

4. Flexible learning modes (offline, online, hybrid, and ODL).

5. The Academic Bank of Credits facilitates mobility, credit transfer, and guidelines for multiple entry and exit in academic programs.

6. Credit requirements for postgraduate programs are based on the type and duration of the undergraduate degree.

 Eligibility Criteria:

"A student is eligible for a PG program in a discipline corresponding to either a major or minor(s) discipline in the UG program. The university can admit students to the PG program based on their performance in the UG program or through an entrance examination," according to the UGC PG program framework.

Admission eligibility for PG programs depends on the completion of relevant UG majors or minors, with criteria typically involving UG course performance or entrance exams conducted at national or university levels.
