TISS to review decisions on ban progressive students

The Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) had declared a ban on the student’s body which is Progressive Student Body, a group affiliated to Students federation of India (SFI)of four days back. Now it has taken a decision to review this. The institute shared so by a public notice released on Saturday.

In the public notice released on August 24, 2025, the Officiating Register of the institute Narendra Mishra stated “With respect to representation dated 23rd August 2024 addressed to the TISS authorities by Progressive Students Forum, it is to state that competent authority has taken considered view and suggested to review the order of ban imposed on PSF, in the larger interest of the student bodies and the institute. The said issue is under review and the institute will come back with the decision in due course of time.”

Last week, on August 19, 2024 the institution had declared the student’s body illegal and put a ban on it. It stated, The PSF , a wing of communist Party of India , an unauthorised and illegal forum on the campus and citing it as “misleading students” and “defaming the institute” and creating division among the students and faculty .”

The students’ body has received support from various external and internal bodies. In addition, the teachers association of the institution has also requested to registrar of the institute on Friday urging to reconsider ban on PSF, the student body

In response to on-going development, one of the students associated with PSF shared “This decision to review is due to public outrage and solidarity that PSF received from various students’ organisations from inside as well as outside of the TISS campus, including teachers from the institute. Further, we see it very positively that the Chancellor of the institute has intervened after PSF wrote to him about the issue. We hope that it is a genuine review and not just a tactic to distract attention of people from the issue.”
