Professor Najma Akhtar, former Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), was recently honored with the 'Lifetime Achievement Award-Academia'.
Prof. Mohammad Shakeel has been appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, following approval from the Hon’ble President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of the university. The appointment comes under Statute 2(6) of the JMI Act, 1988, as per an official notice.
Previously, Mohammad Shakeel was appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor on May 22, after the Delhi High Court nullified the appointment of Eqbal Hussain and instructed the university to appoint a new acting Vice-Chancellor within a week. The court had ruled that Hussain's appointments, first as Pro-Vice Chancellor and subsequently as Acting Vice-Chancellor, did not comply with the university's statutes.
Professor Eqbal Hussain had contested Mohammad Shakeel's appointment in the Delhi High Court, arguing that the new appointment was unlawful and arbitrary.
Meanwhile, the former Vice-Chancellor of JMI, Professor Najma Akhtar, was recently honored with the 'Lifetime Achievement Award-Academia' at a prestigious conference and award function titled “Making India Employable,” organized by TeamLease EdTech
