India’s medical college count surges to 731 nearly double the number in 2014 marking a major expansion in medical education.

According to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, the country has witnessed substantial expansion in medical education with a near doubling of numbers to 731 since 2014. The minister further announced that undergraduate medical seats have also witnessed a significant increase which have now surpassed 1 lakh up from 51,348. The undergraduate seats have surged by 118 percent growth, while postgraduate seats have experienced an even more impressive 133 percent expansion.

The health minister reaffirms that Narendra Modi government prioritise citizen health boasting that India is home to the world’ largest health scheme a flagship program under PM’s leadership.

The health minister highlighted the significant investments in healthcare noting that the budget is tripled from Rs 33,278 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 90,958 crore currently. The minister also emphasised the expansion of AIMS institutions from a single facility before 2014 to 22 approved locations under Modi Government with already operational and 4 under construction.

Additionally minister noted the success of Ayushman Bharat Scheme which has provided free treatment to over 55 crore people from 12 crore families with coverage up to Rs 5 lakh. The scheme was also led to the establishment of 1.73 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandira offering free medicine health facilities resulting in reduction of out-of-pocket expenditure from 62% to 47.1%.

With a near doubling of medical colleges, substantial increase in undergraduate seats and notable investments in healthcare, India is poised to become hub for quality education and healthcare aligning with government’s vision for a healthier India.
