MCD to recover 4.55 lakh from DU

DUSU elections were conducted on September 27,2024. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will recover around Rs 4.55 lakh from University of Delhi. It is for the costs which have been incurred in removing the illegal hoardings, posters and banners during elections which were defaced.

As per a status report, MCD has deployed a team of 37 workers and four trucks for 11 days, from the time period of September 13,2024 to September 26,2024, till a day before DUSU elections for clearing the affected area.

Presently, the declaration of DUSU election results have been put on hold as ordered by the court until the defacement is fully cleared, Initially, the date of result was scheduled for September 28,2024. However, the results are now not likely to be announced until next hearing, which is on October 21,2024.

It was asked if Delhi University plans to appeal to the court for a relaxation in declaring the results, Chief Election Officer Satyapal Singh stated that the administration will comply with the court’s order.

“The court stalled the result declaration due to massive violations of election rules by the candidates, resulting in penalties and property damage costs. We will not appeal for an exemption and will wait for the court’s hearing on October 21,” Singh told.

Amidst the campaign season, there were reports of defacement and property damage on which a notice had also been issued which stated, “The DUSU election office is keeping a close watch over the display of banners, posters and the number of vehicles used in rallies and other modes of canvassing by different candidates. These should be strictly within the limits mentioned in the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations,”.

Later Delhi High court ruled, Voting will happen however counting would not take place until the clearance of college premises from posters and banners.

Around 1.45 lakh students voted in elections.
