Officials said on Wednesday that two main rivers in Manipur's Imphal West and Imphal East districts had broken their embankments due to heavy and continuous rains, causing catastrophic flooding. According to a senior official, the Kongba River breached at Kongba Irong and portions of Keirao in Imphal East, and the Imphal River breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West. Furthermore, in Sawombung and several areas of Kshetri Gaon in Imphal East, the Iril River overflowed.
"Huge volumes of river water entered residential localities... Over a 3-km stretch of the India-Myanmar road has also been flooded, affecting more than 1,000 people," the official said. Relief and rescue operations are currently underway for the affected residents.
Meanwhile, a group from the Indian Red Cross Society, assisted by the villagers, recovered the body of a twenty-five-year-old guy who had fallen into the Senapati River on Tuesday afternoon. Over the past few days, a lot of rain has pounded some areas of the state in the northeast.
