Maharashtra to establish 8 new government medical colleges

Maharashtra is all set to add onto the number of medical colleges. It will establish eight new government medical colleges (GMCs) . The capacity of these colleges will be 100 seats each for the academic session 2024-24. The Central Government's health and family welfare department issues has directed orders to approve the seats is reply to the states appeal.

The new medical colleges will be situated in Gadchiroli, Amravati, Washim, Jalna, Buldana, Ambernath, Bhandara, and Hingoli districts. This decision comes after a second appeal by the state's Medical Education Department.

With addition in 100 seats each , there will be total 800 seats added. It will increase the opportunity for the aspiring medical students significantly.

Few months back, in August only two out of ten proposed GMCs , one in Mumbai and other is Nashik were approved. Resulting in total 100 seats combined. However now the left gap has been addressed by the central government's approval of remaining eight colleges.

“The documents and submissions made by the appellant have been considered by the Central Government,” read the orders issued on September 30. The orders further noted that if inspections at any stage find deficiencies in faculty or infrastructure, permissions could still be revoked.

Now the count for government medical college seats in Maharashtra has raised up to 4.850. The seats are spread over 35 districts. The expansion has come when huge number of students are choosing to study in abroad due to the lack of seats within the state.

The Medical aspirants and parents have appreciated the decision however the concern is , many students might have missed out on these seats as admissions for this academic year are in progress already.

While due to technical error, the Maharashtra CET cell has delayed the announcement of second-round selection list for present medical admissions.

Moreover a statement from Maharashtra 's Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif mentioned each of the 10 GMCs will receive Rs 403 crore for infrastructure development.
