The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert, prompting the declaration of holidays for schools in states like Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. The Goa government announced on Sunday night that due to the intense rains that have been battering the state for the past three days, all schools up to Class 12 will be closed.

State Education Director Shailesh Zingde informed reporters that all Goan schools, from Class I to Class XII, will be closed on Monday due to heavy rains and the IMD's red alert. For the students' safety, he said, the holiday has been declared.

Similar to other governments, the Keralan government has announced a vacation in response to the crisis. Colleges in Kasargod will be open today, while schools in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kasargod have been announced to be closed.

IMD has issued an orange alert for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts and a red alert for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts in Kerala due to the possibility of heavy rain in numerous areas.

In the meantime, citing a "red alert" issued by the meteorological department, Uttara Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) Laxmipriya has declared a holiday for all schools and post-university colleges in the taluks of Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Dandeli, and Joida today.

With 220 mm of rain on Sunday, Castle Rock in Uttara Kannada had the most, according to the IMD.

In the Uttara Kannada district, a red alert and heavy rain are in effect from 1 pm on July 14 to 8.30 pm on July 16, according to the weather service.

According to KSNDMC, the current off-shore trough along the coast of Maharashtra and north Kerala, as well as the cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, are to blame for the intense monsoon conditions over Karnataka. These features are directing additional moisture into Karnataka.
