Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) holds the distinction of being the world's largest university by student enrollment.
The Indira Gandhi National Open University's (IGNOU) School of Agriculture has launched a pioneering degree programme in food safety. This programme, not currently available through traditional, online, or Open and Distance Learning (ODL) modes, is a first-of-its-kind initiative.
The BSc (Food Safety and Quality Management) (BSCFFSQM) programme will be available from the July 2024 session and will be offered in both January and July sessions. IGNOU is the first university to offer a Bachelor’s degree in food safety and quality management, making this programme a unique endeavour. The curriculum has been designed to meet the educational needs of stakeholders in the food processing and food safety industries.
The minimum duration of the programme is three years under the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), but candidates have the flexibility to complete it within eight years. Eligibility for enrolment requires a 10+2 qualification with Science/Agriculture subjects or its equivalent.
Graduates of this programme can pursue various career paths, including:
- Food safety team leader/member in the food industry or hospitality institutions
- Food safety officer/inspector in regulatory bodies
- Auditor in certification and inspection bodies
- Trainer/Counsellor in training/counselling organizations
- Member of supply chain management teams in retail chains or industries
