Towards a major step in healthcare education. The Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on October 24,2024 that post-graduate (PG) courses will be introduced soon. It will be at Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College (RKGMC) in Harmirpur.
The state has sanctioned the creation of six associate professor and 10 assistant professor positions in crucial departments. It will include General Medicine, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesia, and Radiology.Sukhu stated “Specialists are crucial to healthcare services in medical colleges and hospitals, making the introduction of PG programmes vital for advancing patient care".
In addition, the Chief Minister also talked about growing patient load at RKGMC and the need for additional PG courses in other specialities. Its essentiality and feasibility certificates are issued for new PG programmes in Ophthalmology, Dermatology, and Physiology.
To boost staffing, the government has authorised 150 new nursing poster at RKGMC. It's goal is to achieve optimal patient-to-nurse ratios, like 1:1 ratio in ICUs and a 1:4 ratio in antenatal general wards.
Moreover,1,182 new posts have been created in the past year for medical staff at other leading institutions. It includes Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Tanda, with similar initiatives underway across the state’s medical colleges.
The move is a reflection of the government's commitment to bolstering healthcare infrastructure and meeting the requirements of the state's growing patient population. It will not only evolve the standard of services but also contribute in Himachal Pradesh's development. The state will now provide PG courses in medical science, making it more convenient for students there and giving them opportunity to learn and gain knowledge.
Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur is a full-fledged tertiary care medical college established in 2018. It offers MBBS courses and recently started DNB postgraduate programs. The college aims to produce skilled medical professionals to cater to the healthcare needs of the region.
