Government approved 990 crore for establish AI centers of excellence

Towards an initiative for boosting Artificial Intelligence (AI) for different aspects of National Growth. The Government of India has approved a Rs 990 crore for launch of three AI centres of Excellence (CoEs) across key sectors such as healthcare, Agriculture and Sustainable Cities.

The announcement of the same was made by the Education Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He outlined the ambitious plan whose goal is at making India a global leader in AI-driven innovation and research.

The three AI CoEs, to be situated in New Delhi. It will be led by premier institutions in collaboration with industry stakeholders an startup, fostering a robust AI ecosystem.

The project is spread in the span of five years (FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28) It is designed to drive interdisciplinary research, develop innovative application and create scalable solutions across these critical sectors.

-Healthcare CoE: IT will be led by AIIMS and IIT Delhi, it will focus on AI applications in medical diagnostics, treatment planning and healthcare delivery.  

-Agriculture CoE: It will be headed by IIT Ropar, it will focus on revolutionising precision framing, crop monitoring and resource management using AI tools.

-Sustainable Cities CoE : It will be manged by IIT Kanpur , it will work on smart city technology ,urban planning and environment sustainability.

The centres will be a part of Government’s broader vision for Viksit Bharat with emphasis on harnessing AI for public good.

The Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasised the transformative potential of these AI CoES in creating jobs and boosting start-up ecosystem. He expressed his delight about how the centres will nurture a new generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, and researchers, creating wealth and driving sustainable development.

Pradhan mentioned that the establishment of these AI Centres of Excellence will position India as a global hub for AI solutions, benefiting not only the nation but also contributing to the global public good.
