Goa Government plans a new fisheries Institute. It will be equipped with modern classrooms, specialized departments under fisheries science, laboratories, and all the other required infrastructure.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inspected the site allotted for the new Goa Agriculture college and the already existing Fisheries Training Centre at old Goa on October 22,2024, Tuesday. He was accompanied by team of officials. Sawant assessed the progress and plans for the facilities of the emerging fishing institute at the site.
“Our efforts aim to modernise the centre’s facilities, introduce advanced training modules, and promote innovative practices that support the local fishing community,” said Sawant.
At the site, the present fisheries training centre will be upgraded. It will turn into a professional college, it will be equipped with modern classrooms, specialised departments under fisheries science, laboratories, and all the other required infrastructure, Sawant mentioned.
The minister also laid focus on the urgency of the project. He directed official to goal for operational start by the coming academic year.
The director of agriculture, Sandeep Faldesai stated “A portion of the land currently belongs to the directorate of fisheries and partly belongs to the directorate of animal husbandry and veterinary services, which will be transferred to the State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI). Consequently, the fisheries institute will operate under the directorate of agriculture,”
Few days back, the government was considering offering a degree in the field of pisciculture. An announcement was made by the Chief Minister during inauguration event of Goa Agriculture at Ela Farm. But the Goa Agriculture college was set up inside a hall situated in the Ela Farm. Sawant then committed to build a new building to accommodate students.
Directorate of Fisheries has its Head Office at Panaji. It provides Infrastructural facilities, deals with the Registration of Fishing vessel, Fishing canoes/Fishing crafts, fishing nets etc. The Directorate also implements various developmental as well as welfare schemes for the upliftment of the Fishermen and the fishing industry in Goa State.
