Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the creation of Centres of Excellence in both the Garhwal and Kumaon regions to improve technical education. During a review meeting with the Technical Education Department at the Secretariat, he stressed the importance of maximizing campus placements for students in government technical institutes.
CM Dhami also advocated for the introduction of modern courses and state-of-the-art equipment in these institutes to meet the needs of the industry.
The Chief Minister underscored the importance of maintaining clear data on the percentage of technical institute graduates who secure employment or pursue further education. He emphasized the need to provide adequate local employment opportunities for technically educated youth, reducing their need to seek jobs outside the state.
Furthermore, he recommended offering skill development programs for plumbers, electricians, welders, and other mechanical trades to the youth.
The meeting revealed that over the past three years, polytechnics have facilitated employment and self-employment for 6,490 youths, with 369 placed in government sectors and 552 under the community development scheme. In the coming year, with assistance from IIT Roorkee, virtual labs will be established, and training will be provided in various government polytechnics.
Plans are also in place to set up the Uttarakhand State Career Counselling Centre and to develop polytechnic institutes as service providers, connecting unemployed youth with business opportunities.
