CBSE has released guidelines for admitting and supporting Children with Special Needs (CwSN),
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared guidelines for admitting and supporting children with Special Needs(CwSN) . The guidelines come as a step towards making schools more inclusive and equal. The efforts aim to present equal opportunity in education, recreation, and sports for children with special needs.
These guidelines are incorporated with the the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act,2016 specifically under section 16. It mandates all educational institutions funded or recognized by the government must provide inclusive education with disabilities.
Schools must build their campuses and facilities accessible to all students, irrespective of their physical abilities. The guidelines focus on reasonable accommodation based on individual requirements. Each student with a certain disability has the support and opportunity for their social and educational development. In addition, the schools must ensure students who are deaf, blind, or both are offered the most suitable mode of communication. As per the guidelines, the schools must make sure they detect the specific learning disabilities early and appropriate measures to guide students in these difficulties. To reflect on the progress, schools must keep track of each CwSN student’s participation, achievement, and completion of education.Moreover, it is essential for schools to emphasise providing transport facilities and attendant support if required.
-Schools must construct ramp on the ground floor for convenient access.
-Construct separate and accessible toilets for girls and boys with space for walkers and wheelchairs.
- Schools should confirm the floor that will be dedicated to CwSn classes and practicals.
-The entrance and doorways should be wide , ranging from 1500 to 1800mm.
-Avoid sharp turns and walkways should be free from obstacles with handrails.
-Using bright color contrast for better visibility at slopes and stairs.
The guidelines issued by CBSE focus on accessible and diverse education for all. It is a step towards inclusivity.
