British Council initiates program to educate Indian youth in climate-related skills

The British Council, in collaboration with HSBC India, has introduced the 'Climate Skills: Seeds for Transition India' initiative. This project aims to prepare Indian youth with essential abilities to combat climate change impacts and facilitate the shift towards net zero emissions.

Part of a global climate skills framework, the initiative aims to empower youth, influence decision-makers on climate education strategies, and address climate challenges comprehensively.

Going beyond theoretical discourse, the initiative collaborates with governments, communities, and institutions to develop practical solutions. Scott McDonald, Chief Executive of the British Council, stressed the alignment with HSBC's vision for a sustainable future.

 

PROJECT DETAILS

Scheduled from July 2024 to February 2026, the initiative targets young people aged 18-30 across five countries: India, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, and Vietnam.

In India, the project aims to train over 2,000 climate skills educators and youth leaders, with a focus on marginalized groups. Additionally, 300 master trainers will receive training across all five countries.

The program focuses on enhancing climate literacy, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental challenges, and developing core leadership and professional skills essential for personal and career growth.

Hitendra Dave, CEO of HSBC India, emphasized the partnership's dedication to youth education, aiming to enhance climate literacy and employability among marginalized Indian youth.

The initiative includes training local community organizations to support young people in contributing to the green economy, structured in three phases emphasizing climate literacy and leadership skills.

The British Council's commitment to climate action is evident through its emphasis on empowering both urban and rural youth.

 

LAUNCH EVENT

The project's launch on July 11, 2024, featured key figures like Scott McDonald, Hitendra Dave, Lindy Cameron CB OBE, British High Commissioner to India, and other dignitaries. The event included a climate-themed film screening and discussions on project goals and implementation strategies.
