Bihar schools closed until September 21 due to rising Ganga water

The water level in the Ganga River has been increasing in past days, considering the effect the government of Bihar has taken decision to shut schools for three to four days. The Bihar government has ordered the closure of 76 schools across the region. The decision is announced by the District Magistrate (DM) Chandrashekhar Singh. According to the notice, the schools will remain closed until Saturday, September 21,2024.

The schools that are affected are, Athmalgola, Barh, Bakhtiyarpur, Mokama, Sardar, Danapur,Maner and Fatuah. The decision is taken to safeguard the school students, staff and teacher’s lives. The above-mentioned areas have been identified as being in the danger zone due to the rising water levels, and the order to close schools has been implemented on the immediate basis.

As per the official notice from the Bihar Education Department, the decision to close the schools was made in accordance with Letter No. 677 dated August 24, 2024. It was issued following concerns over the potential threat to life and safety posed by the rising Ganga River, which has now crossed the danger mark.

While, the rising water levels have caused flooding in low-lying areas, exacerbating concerns for residents. The Central Water Commission has also issued forecasts predicting further increases in water levels, leading the Water Resources Department to increase vigilance along embankments. The Engineers and officials have been ordered to patrol the affected areas at night to ensure the safety of the region.

Last month as well , The Bihar government had authorised District Magistrates to take a call on the closing of schools if a flood-like situation arose in their respective areas of jurisdiction. The order also comes close on the heels of a government school teacher falling into the Ganga near Patna and getting swept away by strong currents

In such natural threats, it is best to take safety precautions. The 76 Schools in Bihar will be closed till September 21,2024 according to the notice released by the government on September 17,2024.
