Acc. to DU there are no intentions to create a separate PhD entry exam

Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh announced that Delhi University (DU), unlike Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), will not hold separate PhD entrance exams. He stated that the University Grants Commission (UGC) is still assisting the university.

Following the discontinuing of the UGC NET exam, which was once a crucial requirement for admission to PhD schools, there is now uncertainty about PhD admissions. The UGC NET exam, given by the National Testing Agency (NTA), determines a candidate's eligibility for teaching posts.

"We don't intend to conduct a different internal PhD entry exam. Whatever the UGC recommends, we'll do. We are waiting on the NTA's instructions as we have not heard from them. According to news agency ANI, DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh stated, "We expect the academic session for PhD to be delayed by a month."

In response to questions on Delhi University's plans to hold its entrance exam amid the controversy surrounding the NTA's UGC NET exam, Singh made his comments.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) voiced worries about the exam's integrity, leading the central government to cancel it on June 19.

JNU MAY DROPPING THE UGC NET REQUIREMENT FOR APPLICATIONS TO PhD PROGRAMS

In the interim, JNU is thinking about holding its entrance exam again instead of using the UGC NET exam for PhD admissions. By the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, JNU had originally chosen to accept National Eligibility Test (NET) scores rather than holding a separate entrance exam this year.

The UGC determined in a notification dated March 27, 2024, that NET scores might be used in place of entrance exams for PhD admissions in universities and higher education institutions (HEIs) beginning with the academic session 2024–25.

Since December 2018, Indian universities and colleges have used the UGC NET, an assessment administered by the NTA using computer-based testing (CBT), to decide who is eligible for assistant professorships and junior research fellowships (JRFs).

The combined result in Papers I and II of the UGC NET determines who is eligible for an Assistant Professorship or a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).
