At its 24th convocation, IIT Roorkee awarded degrees to 2513 students on Saturday, with a notable increase in the proportion of female graduates.
At its 24th convocation, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) granted degrees to 2513 students, of whom 582 were female and 1931 were male.
The percentage of female graduates increased dramatically this year, from 18.84 percent in 2022 to 23.16 percent in 2024.
There are 1277 undergraduate students total, comprising 1121 BTech students, 68 Integrated MSc students, 61 Integrated MSc students, 22 BMA students, and 5 Integrated Dual Degree students.
There are 794 postgraduate students total: 511 Master of Technology students, 151 Master of Science students, 82 Master of Business Administration students, 15 Master of Design (Industrial Design) students, 15 Master of Architecture students, 13 Master of Urban and Rural Planning students, 6 Master in Innovation Management students, and 1 Post Graduate Diploma student.
442 students are pursuing a doctorate in philosophy, comprising 438 PhDs, 1 double doctorate, 2 dual degree programs (MTech + PhD), and 1 dual degree program (MURP + PhD).
The acknowledgment of academic excellence was one of the main highlights of the IIT Roorkee convocation. Achintya Nath, a Computer Science and Engineering BTech graduate, was awarded the President's Gold Medal for having the highest CGPA among JEE Advanced-admitted UG candidates.
For his exceptional all-around performance, Parth Sarthi Mishra, a BTech graduate in Electronics and Communication Engineering, was given the Director's Gold Medal.
The Chief Guest for the occasion was Debjani Ghosh, President of NASSCOM, and the Chairperson of the Board of Governors, BVR Mohan Reddy, presided over it.
Professor KK Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, presented the annual report, highlighting the institute’s achievements, including securing 148 patents and advancing its QS World Rankings from 369th to 335th.
In his address, BVR Mohan Reddy congratulated the graduates, saying, “Your hard work, dedication, and passion have brought you to this milestone, and I am confident that the knowledge and skills you have acquired here will serve you well in all your future endeavours.”
Debjani Ghosh inspired the graduates, stating, “The decisions you make, the systems you build, and the innovations you create will shape not just the future of technology but the future of humanity.”
Professor Pant also mentioned the institute's winning of the Best Clean and Green Campus Award and the Most Innovative Institute Award from the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for four years running.
He emphasised the new Micron Semiconductor Lab, the Centre of Excellence on AARTI with the Ministry of Heavy Industries, and the enhanced industry-academia linkages.
