For the 2024-2025 academic year, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has authorised the founding of 113 new undergraduate medical colleges. In addition to helping aspirant medical students, this momentous action attempts to alleviate the country's chronic shortage of healthcare experts by expanding the number of MBBS seats available.

On July 6, 2024, the NMC published a public notice on the official website announcing the decision. Using the contact information included in their applications, the Commission has emailed the relevant medical institutions to inform them of its approvals. Once these institutions receive the official letter, they have a deadline to follow for taking the necessary action.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) had earlier on April 3 invited applications for new undergraduate medical colleges; the NMC's approval came after its notice.

Additional information

The National Medical Commission Act, 2019, which was passed by Parliament, created the NMC. Its goals include expanding access to high-quality, reasonably priced medical education; guaranteeing the availability of qualified medical professionals throughout the country; advocating for universal, equitable healthcare with a community health focus; making it easier for practitioners to adopt state-of-the-art medical research; and encouraging their active involvement in research projects.

In addition, the NMC maintains a national medical registration, carries out open audits of medical facilities on a regular basis, enforces strict ethical standards in medical practice, and puts in place a functional grievance procedure.
