The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) in Nagpur is one of thirty National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in India. On June 26, 2002, the Government of India designated VNIT as a Deemed University under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956), in recognition of its outstanding contributions to education. Following that, the Central Government designated VNIT Nagpur as an Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 (29 of 2007), putting it on par with other prestigious NITs. This significant transformation came into effect on August 15, 2007.
Initially known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE), the institute traces its origins to 1960. It was established under a scheme sponsored by the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra. The college came into being by merging the State Government Engineering College, which had been functioning in Nagpur since July 1956. In a meeting held in October 1962, the Governing Board of the College unanimously decided to rename the institution as a tribute to the illustrious engineer, planner, and statesman of the country, Sir M. Visvesvaraya.
The core objective behind the establishment of Regional Engineering Colleges, including VRCE, was to provide high-quality technical education throughout the nation and foster national integration. VRCE began its operations in 1960 from a temporary office located within the premises of Govt. Polytechnic in Sadar, Nagpur. Recognizing the need for a dedicated campus, an extensive area spanning approximately 214 acres was acquired to establish an independent Regional Engineering College at its present location.
