The National Council for Teacher Education (N.C.T.E.) has recognised St. Xavier's Institute of Education (Autonomous), the oldest government-aided, Christian minority teacher education college for the B.Ed. and Ph.D. programmes, which is affiliated with the University of Mumbai. The Jesuit Mumbai Province of the Society of Jesus founded and oversees the Christian minority college known as St. Xavier's Institute of Education (Autonomous).The Institute began operations in June 1953 at St. Xavier's College before moving to its current location at Churchgate. When Bombay University granted the Institute affiliation in 1953, Fr. Angel Solagran began the B.Ed. degree programme. He served as SXIE and SXBA's first Superior and Principal as well as its architect and founder. It took up the Dip. Ed. Course from St. Xavier's College in 1955, and until the University discontinued it in 1977, it was the only college associated with Bombay University that offered it.The full-time, two-year B.Ed degree programme. It comprises regular lectures, practice teaching, lesson observation, community service, an internship programme, the creation of instructional materials and teaching aids, and project work. It also blends theory and practicals.
