About Scottish Church College

The spread of European education along with the principles of Christianity played an important role in promoting missionary work in 19th century India. From this impulse was born the Church of Scotland College, originally founded in 1830 as an institution of the General Assembly and later renamed in 1929. The college was founded by the Reverend Alexander Duff, the first missionary of the Church of Scotland in India, with the aim of building an institution that would combine Western education, Christian missions and the general development of the nation. The college remains committed to the vision of its founder and try hard for academic excellence while highlight social awareness and character development. The Scottish Church College in North Calcutta is the second oldest college in the region and has produced many notables including Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Now, the college is owned and managed by the Church of North India (CNI) of the Diocese of Calcutta, which is affiliated to Calcutta University. The college offers honors courses at undergraduate level in 15 subjects and postgraduate studies in two subjects.
