Sashi Bhusan Rath Government Autonomous Women's College, formerly known as S.B.R Govt. (Auto & Junior) Women’s College, Berhampur, is a prestigious educational institution located in Odisha, India. Established on July 7, 1958, the college initially operated under the affiliation of Utkal University. Its humble beginnings began with Intermediate Arts classes, conducted within the premises of the Government Secondary Training School in Berhampur. Despite its modest start, the college flourished under the guidance of six dedicated Associate Professors, who worked tirelessly to shape the institution into what it is today.
In 1967, the college gained affiliation with Berhampur University and introduced Degree classes in Arts. Over the years, it expanded its academic offerings to include Science in 1981 and Commerce in 2013. With a focus on specialized education, the college introduced Honours classes in various subjects. Economics (1974-75), English (1975-76), History (1978-79), Political Science and Psychology (1980), Home Science (1981-82), Botany and Zoology (1989-90), Physics, Chemistry, Sanskrit, and Odia (1992-93), and Philosophy (2010-11) were some of the subjects that offered Honours programs. Additionally, Commerce was introduced in 2014, further diversifying the curriculum.
Apart from academics, the college offers residential facilities to its students. The hostel was established in 1964, providing a conducive environment for learning, as well as opportunities for creative activities, social service, and nurturing a sense of patriotism. The college boasts a long-standing tradition of publishing its magazine, which first debuted in 1963. The students actively participate in activities conducted by the N.S.S (National Service Scheme), N.C.C (National Cadet Corps), and Red Cross wings. The N.S.S and N.C.C volunteers have earned recognition and respect not only within the state but also nationwide. Furthermore, the college serves as a nodal center for a self-defense training program for the entire district, contributing to the empowerment and safety of its students.
Currently, the college has a student strength of 2560 and a faculty comprising members from various disciplines. With aspirations to become one of the most esteemed institutions in the state, the college seeks genuine cooperation from all stakeholders.
In recognition of its contribution to women's education, the college underwent a name change on October 21, 1998, becoming known as Sasibhushan Rath Govt. Women's College, Berhampur, as per the notification by the government of Odisha, Department of Higher Education. Furthermore, the college achieved Autonomous status in 2007, granting it academic independence and the ability to design and implement its own curriculum. This autonomy reflects the college's commitment to delivering quality education and fostering an environment that encourages intellectual growth and holistic development.
The college's dedication to excellence has been acknowledged by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which accredited the institution at the 'B++' level during its second cycle on December 14, 2016. This accreditation highlights the college's adherence to high-quality educational standards and its continuous efforts to provide a conducive learning environment for its students.
