About Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh

The late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the Chief Minister of Punjab, and the illustrious medical educators of the then-combined state of Punjab are among the visionary leaders of the era who are credited with creating the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). The first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru shared their vision and thought that scientific research institutions should be revered as temples of learning and holy sites. Because of their shared goal, the institute was founded in 1962, and Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru opened the hospital, currently known as "Nehru Hospital," on July 7, 1963. The Government of Punjab was initially in charge of running the institute. The administrative control of the institute was, however, moved to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966 as a result of the state's reorganization. The institute began operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India in 1967 after becoming an autonomous entity through a Parliamentary Act. The institute was able to carry out its specialized task thanks to its independence. When PGIMER, Chandigarh was first conceptualized in 1960, its main goal was to create a center of excellence for postgraduate medical education. The institute sought to generate professionals qualified to contribute to medical colleges and institutions across the nation while also developing cutting-edge teaching approaches in several medical fields. It was intended that these experts would create centers of excellence inside their respective universities in addition to offering students top-notch medical education. Additionally, PGIMER was given the mandate to advance medical knowledge by doing extensive research in the area of health. The institute was required to meet the nation's demand for highly trained medical teachers in all medical and surgical specialties, deliver exceptional patient care, and become self-sufficient in postgraduate medical education. PGIMER also aims to provide educational facilities for the training of medical staff in crucial areas of medical activity. To further demonstrate its dedication to community health, PGIMER also carried out fundamental community-based research. This was done in recognition of the significance of resolving health concerns at the community level and contributing to the general welfare of society. As a leading medical institution today, PGIMER, Chandigarh is renowned for its superior patient care, medical education, and research. The institute's persistent commitment to its mission has led to the progress of medical knowledge, the training of qualified healthcare workers, and the delivery of high-quality healthcare services to the community.
