About National Dairy Research Institute

ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) located in Karnal, Haryana, holds a prominent position among institutes dedicated to the dairy sector. Through its extensive research and contributions, NDRI has played a pivotal role in the growth of the dairy industry and has been instrumental in India's progress in milk production. With a rich history spanning over ninety-six years, NDRI traces its roots back to the establishment of the Imperial Institute for Animal Husbandry & Dairying in Bangalore in 1923, which served as a center for dairy education. The significance of NDRI's early years is highlighted by the fact that two eminent personalities, Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, received training at the Imperial Institute in 1927. They sought to familiarize themselves with modern techniques in cattle management and engaged in extensive discussions to understand the complexities and technical aspects pertaining to cows and buffalos in India. During his visit, Mahatma Gandhi expressed admiration for the institute's highly productive crossbred cow named 'Jill.' Additionally, he focused on the welfare of low-yielding and often sterile cows housed in Pinjrapoles (shelters for abandoned animals) and wrote extensively about the importance of dairying and scientific cattle management in publications like 'Young India' and 'Harijan.' Gandhi's influential thinking and views subsequently impacted key policy decisions taken in the early post-Independence era, leading to the establishment of initiatives such as the Key Village Scheme, Gosamvardhana Council, and intensive Cattle Development Programmes. The original infrastructure in Bangalore continued to function as the southern regional station of NDRI, while an additional eastern regional station was established in Kalyani, West Bengal, in 1964. In 1970, NDRI became a part of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Notably, since 1989, the institute has held the distinction of being a Deemed University, offering exceptional academic programs in the field of dairying, a feat unparalleled in Asia. NDRI's impact extends beyond its own academic programs. It actively contributes to the development of manpower in the dairy sector, catering to the requirements of State Agricultural Universities (SAUs). Moreover, the institute plays a vital role in enhancing the teaching capabilities of faculty members from SAUs, further strengthening the overall education system in the field of dairying. At NDRI, emphasis is placed on providing high-quality education, conducting cutting-edge research, and fostering innovation in the dairy industry. The institute's curriculum and academic initiatives are designed to meet the evolving needs and challenges of the sector. By equipping students with a comprehensive understanding of dairy science and technology, NDRI prepares them to become competent professionals who can contribute significantly to the dairy industry's growth and development. In conclusion, ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute stands as a pioneering institution in the dairy sector, driven by a rich history and a commitment to excellence. Its legacy of research, training, and academic programs has had a profound impact on the dairy industry in India. NDRI continues to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the dairy sector by producing skilled professionals, advancing scientific knowledge, and fostering innovation to meet the ever-increasing demands and opportunities in this field.
