About Madras Christian College

Madras Christian College (MCC) has a long history that extends back to its founding as the General Assembly School on April 3, 1837, by Rev. John Anderson, a Church of Scotland missionary. Rev. Anderson was a trailblazer in establishing English medium education in South India. In his educational endeavours, he received invaluable assistance from Rev. Johnston, Rev. Braidwood, and Margaret Locher Anderson. Rev. William Miller, who arrived in 1862, saw important advancements at the institution. In 1865 and 1867, Miller enlarged the institution by providing F.A. and B.A. courses. Miller, along with other Protestant missions in Madras, converted the school into a college, dubbing it 'Madras Christian College' on January 1, 1877. Rev. William Miller's academic vision, along with generous contributions from family members, previous students, and the Madras Government, enabled the construction of spectacular college buildings and dorms across the street from the Madras High Court complex. Following Miller, the college flourished under the guidance of notable persons such as Professors Skinner, E.M. Macphail, Meston, and Hogg. Madras Christian College's overarching goal is to be an institution of excellence that transforms lives through education and is guided by a dedication to service. MCC seeks to give holistic education to individuals from all communities, inspired by God's love. This education is consistent with God's revelation in Christ, which reveals humanity's fundamental nature. Furthermore, MCC strives to personalise its educational programmes to India's and the worldwide community's specific needs. MCC's educational concept is more than just academics; it seeks to develop the full person. The college understands the value of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and social development. MCC aspires to instill values and principles consistent with Christ's teachings through its curriculum and numerous educational programmes. The college's goal is to equip students to be well-rounded persons who can contribute meaningfully to society by integrating faith, education, and practical skills. In keeping with its dedication to service, MCC encourages its students and professors to actively interact with community needs. The college emphasises the idea of using education to positively benefit society. MCC strives to cultivate individuals who will become agents of change and contribute to the betterment of their communities and the globe by imparting a feeling of responsibility and social consciousness. Madras Christian College sees itself as a light of excellence, striving for academic and holistic development at all times.
