Tamil Nadu's Lakshmi College of Education is a part of the prestigious Gandhigram Trust. The Gandhigram Trust was founded on October 7th, 1947, with Mahatma Gandhi's approval and direction. The trust was established to plan and carry out constructive Gandhian programs in Tamil Nadu. Gandhiji's disciples Drs. T.S. Soundram and G. Ramachandran were crucial to the trust's management. The Gandhigram Trust has developed over time into a collection of organizations that offer a range of educational, training, rehabilitative, and health services as well as supporting the Khadi and rural industries. Dr. Soundaram Amma spearheaded the establishment of a teacher training center in 1967 after realizing the crucial role that committed educators, particularly women educators, play in the development of rural areas and the building of nations. Her mother, Srimathi Lakshmi Ammal, kindly offered to donate her golden bangles to cover the initial costs to help her realize her ideal. In honor of Dr. Soundaram Amma's mother, the training center was appropriately called Lakshmi Teacher Training Centre. The institution was afterward renamed Lakshmi College of Education.
