The Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM Kancheepuram) was established in 2007 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, as a Centre of Excellence for Technical Education and Research. The main objective of this institute is to promote design and manufacturing-oriented engineering education and research in order to enhance the competitive advantage of Indian products in international markets. IIITDM Kancheepuram is located on a 51-acre fully residential campus outside of Chennai, on the Vandalur-Kelambakkam road. The institute is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that include an academic block, administrative block, lecture hall complex, and laboratory block. The M.Des programmes offered include electronic systems design, communication systems design, and mechanical systems design. The institute also offers multidisciplinary Ph.D. programmes in both fundamental and applied engineering fields. In 2016-17 academic year, the Institute added a new programme to its offerings: B.Tech Mechanical (Smart Manufacturing), which focuses on the use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automation in the manufacturing industry. This programme is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to lead the transformation of traditional manufacturing processes to smart manufacturing.
