In commemoration of its centennial in 2019, the institute embarked on a new chapter, determined to uphold the legacy with revived energy, resolute determination, and an unwavering commitment to the development of the nation. Banaras Hindu University (BHU), the first residential university of modern India, owes its existence to the visionary leadership of Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. Recognizing the pivotal role of technical education in shaping an independent India, Pandit Malviya laid the foundation for the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi. The inception of engineering education in BHU dates back to 1919 with the establishment of Banaras Engineering College (BENCO). This landmark event marked the genesis of a remarkable journey toward excellence. Subsequently, during a phase of continuous growth, the College of Technology (TECHNO) and the College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET) were established, expanding the academic landscape and providing specialized education in the field of technology. In a significant development, the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU) was formed in 1968 through the amalgamation of BENCO, MINMET, and TECHNO, the erstwhile engineering colleges of the university. This merger not only consolidated the resources but also brought together a wealth of expertise and experience. Consequently, IT-BHU emerged as a distinguished institution that consistently ranked among the top engineering schools in the country. In 1972, IT-BHU adopted the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) as the criterion for student admissions, aligning with the admission process followed by the other prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). This move ensured that IT-BHU attracted the best talent in the nation, further enhancing its reputation and academic prowess. The rigorous selection process upheld the institute's commitment to academic excellence and nurtured a vibrant community of scholars and innovators. To signify its transformation and align with the national IIT standards, IT-BHU underwent a momentous change. On June 29, 2012, an Act of Parliament was passed, bestowing upon the institute the coveted status of an Indian Institute of Technology. With this legislative recognition, IT-BHU was officially renamed as IIT (BHU) Varanasi. The new nomenclature solidified the institute's reputation and conferred upon it the privileges and responsibilities associated with the prestigious IIT brand. Embracing its new identity, IIT (BHU) Varanasi promptly implemented the policies and practices prescribed by the IIT system. The institute's administration swiftly introduced stringent standards of academic rigor, cutting-edge research initiatives, and a strong emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship. By aligning with the established IIT framework, IIT (BHU) Varanasi affirmed its commitment to achieving global excellence in education and research. Today, as IIT (BHU) Varanasi looks ahead to the future, it carries the torch of its rich heritage, fortified by a century of educational excellence.
