About Holy Cross College

Situated in the vibrant city of Tiruchirappalli, Holy Cross College (Autonomous) holds a distinguished reputation as a highly respected Arts and Science College for Women in Tamil Nadu. With its roots deeply embedded in academic excellence, the college stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of women's education. Established in 1923 as a Catholic Institution, Holy Cross College has played a pioneering role in breaking barriers and providing higher education opportunities to women at a time when it was deemed unconventional. Celebrating its 97th year, Holy Cross College has been at the forefront of women's education and is marching steadfastly towards its centenary. Guided by its mission, the college strives to create equal opportunities for students from socially and economically marginalized backgrounds, irrespective of their religion or caste. This commitment to inclusivity and empowerment has earned Holy Cross College its reputation as one of the oldest and most prestigious women's colleges in South India. The college is affiliated with Bharathidasan University and operates under the administration of the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod, Tiruchirappalli Province. The history of Holy Cross College traces back to 1901, when Mother Sophie established a humble primary school with just a few rooms and a handful of students. Over the years, the institution grew steadily, evolving into a college in 1923, attaining the status of a Second Grade College in 1928, and ultimately becoming a Post Graduate College in 1964. Recognizing its significant contributions to women's education, Holy Cross College was granted autonomous status by Bharathidasan University in 1987. This autonomy empowered the college to shape its own curriculum, introduce innovative teaching methods, and provide a dynamic educational experience for its students. The relentless pursuit of excellence led Holy Cross College to be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1999, earning a commendable 5-star rating. The college further reaffirmed its commitment to quality education by securing an 'A' grade upon re-accreditation in 2005 and in subsequent cycles in 2012 and 2020, achieving the highest rating of 'A++' with a CGPA Score of 3.75 on a 4.0 Scale. Recognizing its potential for exceptional performance, the college was also honored with the status of 'College with Potential for Excellence' by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in October 2011, which has been extended till 2022. Holy Cross College's commitment to excellence is evident in its consistent recognition and rankings. The college secured the 26th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in 2017 and further achieved the 42nd position in 2018. These rankings reflect the college's dedication to providing a holistic educational experience and nurturing students to reach their full potential. In conclusion, Holy Cross College (Autonomous) Tiruchirappalli stands as a beacon of women's education, upholding a rich legacy of academic excellence and empowerment. With its steadfast commitment to inclusivity, quality education, and innovative teaching practices, the college continues to inspire and transform the lives of countless women. As it journeys towards its centenary, Holy Cross College remains a testament to the power of education in shaping a brighter future for individuals and society as a whole.
