"The establishment of the Ghanapriya Women's College, Imphal, also known as G.P. Women's College, is linked to the advancement of women's education in the state." In order to promote women's education in Manipur in the public interest, the Government Girls' College, a top State Government school for women, was created in 1964 by dividing the former D.M. College and holding classes on the same site. Shri Hidangmayum Dwijamani Dev Sharma, a prominent Imphal educationist, gave Rs.1 lakh to the institution, and the Government Girl's College was renamed The Ghanapriya Women's College, Imphal after the donor's mother, Hidangmayum Ghanapriya Devi."
After a 10-year period, the Ghanapriya Women's College was relocated to its current campus in the old Lambulane, Jail Road, near the Raj Bhavan, Manipur in 1974, with a specific plan and vision of the State Government to separate the premier institution from D.M. College, Imphal. The current D.M. College of Arts, Imphal site was once The Ghanapriya Women's College, Imphal. On 11 January 1972, Shri D.R. Kohli, Lt. Governor of Manipur, lay the foundation stone for the Ghanapriya Women's College, Imphal, and on 14 August 1974, Shri Yangmaso Shaiza, Chief Minister of Manipur, opened the institution. Many notable academics, scholars, athletes, and others have been created by the institution so far.
The institution offers undergraduate courses in a variety of science and artistic disciplines. G.P. Women's College began offering post-graduate programmes in Life Sciences (Botany and Zoology) in 2016. Since 2018, the institution has been offering Post Graduate Courses through Dhanamanjuri University in 12 (twelve) Departments. Ph.D. studies are also available in a variety of topics. On May 21, 2006, the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council, an autonomous organisation formed by the University Grants Commission) recognised the institution as B Grade, and on November 15, 2015, the college was reaccredited as B Grade with a CGPA of 2.01 on a four-point scale.
