Government Polytechnic College, Panaji

The oldest and largest polytechnic in the state of Goa, Government Polytechnic, Panaji, offers 11 diploma programmes under the Board of Technical Education Goa. The facility is spread out over the picturesque Altinho hill. The Institute was founded in August 1963 and has three departments: civil, mechanical, and electrical, each with 40 seats. Under Portuguese sovereignty, this institution was once called as the "Escola de Industrial e Commercial," and certificate programmes were offered in a variety of professions. The Escola de Industrial e Commercial Institute received polytechnic status during the Liberation of Goa. In 1968, it was moved to the roomy site atop the scenic Altinho hill. It was initially associated with the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Examinations. It has been governed by the Goa Board of Technical Education since 1988. This Institute also administers M.H.R.D.-sponsored programmes, such as the Community Development through Polytechnics Scheme (CDTP), which aims to transfer technology to rural populations and develop the skills of dropout students. Person with Disabilities Scheme to allow students with special needs to participate in technical education or take short-term courses focused on employment. A Community College designation has also been given to this institution, making it one of only 60 Community Colleges in the nation and the only one in the State of Goa. Two diploma vocational courses in building technology and refrigeration and air conditioning, which are both in the construction and infrastructure sectors, will soon begin as part of the National Mission of Skilling India. The total number of admissions seats available is  322 and the process is conducted centrally at the office of the Directorate of Technical Education, Porvorim - Goa.
