Government Polytechnic College, Nagpur

The Government Polytechnic, Nagpur, was founded on 14th July, 1914. At its commencement the school had 16 student on roll. The institution has given birth to Engineering College presently known as V.N.I.T. Nagpur, as well as Govt. Medical College (GMC), Nagpur. 860 students can be accepted into all programmes at once (first shift: 680; second shift: 180). 22 acres of land make up the campus of this institute, which has outstanding infrastructure amenities including well-equipped laboratories, a computer centre, a conference room, an audio-visual room, a community hall, a gym, and a nice play area, among others. There is also housing on campus for 20 trainees, 180 boys, and 54 girls. This institute received academic autonomy from the Maharashtra government in 1995. A staff development unit is set up to plan training sessions for academic staff and administrative personnel across the state. Staff and students can use computerised library services, networking, and the Internet. Broadband internet access is available in the boys' and girls' dormitory. Through continuing education programmes, consulting, testing, the rental of premises, etc., the institute makes money each year (around Rs. 1.25 crore) and wants to increase it in the near future. From 1994 to 1999, this institute undertook the World Bank-assisted project to enhance the standard of technical education. The institution ran the Canada-India institution Industry Linkage Project from 2000 to 2004. The institute obtained funding from the World Bank's Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) worth Rs. 2.55 crore for enhancing its educational offerings, expanding its network, and providing community services. This institution won the ISTE Monjee Award for overall best performance in 1996, as well as the Maharashtra Government's Best Polytechnic Award in 1997. The institution is moving in the direction of being a centre of excellence, which entails performing well and providing great academic services to both regular students and working individuals from industry.
