Tirhut Technical Institute, located on 5 acres of land, was founded in 1924 to provide journeyman training courses. The Government Polytechnic College Muzaffarpur started off as Tirhut Technical Institute. As a result, the journeyman's course was discontinued, and the diploma in engineering programme began in 1949, with a total enrollment of sixty.
The enrollment was extended to 180 (C+M+E) each of 60 numbers under the 1960-61 expansion project, and the institution was called Government Polytechnic, Muzaffarpur. The hostel of the institution is situated about 2 Kms. from the institution in Ganipur area in about 5 Acres of land. The institution is present in the heart of Muzaffarpur town.
Government Polytechnic, Muzaffarpur is completely a government institution in the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Bihar, and must act as such. However, in academic and related areas, it must be responsive and participate in the decisions and deliberations of the All India Council for Technical Education and other apex bodies such as the Indian School for Technical Education, Technical Teachers Training Institutes, State Board of Technical Education, and Department of Science and Technology, among others, in order to ensure innovations in pedagogical and practical aspects of Technical Education. The Institute's Administration and Management are also focused on these goals. Though the Principal is in ultimate responsibility of all activities and movements at the Institute, the following service departments endeavour to ensure seamless operation and effective administration.
Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering are all disciplines. Since its foundation, the Institute has maintained an active relationship with industry. Scholarships are given to our students by several PSUs. Government Polytechnic, Muzaffarpur has achieved and established standards for excellence in academics and extracurricular activities.
Diploma Combined Entrance Competitive Examination (DCECE) is used to admit students. Bihar Government's BCECE Board. The entry criteria for first year (1st Semester) admission is a minimum of a 10th grade pass. Also, ITI or vocational courses pass students are admitted directly into the second year (3rd semester) through the Diploma Combined Entrance Competitive Examination (DCECE (L.E.). It is also administered by the Bihar Government's BCECE Board.
