To provide the nation with a trained workforce in the technology sector, technical education is necessary. Technical education, in contrast to traditional education, places a strong emphasis on certain teaching strategies and seeks to move beyond typical learning paradigms. Technical education equips people with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in today's technologically advanced society. Along with improving career prospects, it also gives students the tools they need to start their businesses.
The institution was established in October 1975 in rented space in Pithoragarh's Farnhill border district. With a 30-student maximum enrollment, it initially provided a three-year diploma program in civil engineering and a two-year program in stenography and secretarial practice. A three-year diploma program in Electrical Engineering with a maximum enrollment of 30 students was later launched in the academic year 1984–1985 (see preceding paragraph).
From the academic year 1986–1987, the Government Polytechnic Lohaghat added a diploma program in electronics engineering with a 30-student intake limit. A two-year pharmacy diploma program with a maximum enrollment of 30 students was also added to the institution's curriculum during the academic year 1985–1986. To suit the changing needs of the industry, a three-year diploma program in information technology was launched in 2002–2003.
Government Polytechnic Lohaghat, which is situated in Chhamniyan on roughly 8 hectares of land, has had its structures since 1990. Chhamniyan is situated 4 kilometers from Lohaghat on the Lohaghat-Barakot road and 89 kilometers from the Tanakpur railway station on the Tanakpur-Pithoragarh motorway.
Government Polytechnic in Lohaghat provides diploma programs in office management and secretarial practice, electronics engineering, pharmacy, and civil engineering. The Pharmacy Council of India regulates the pharmacy program, while the All India Council for Technical Education sets the requirements for the engineering programs. The state government established the Uttarakhand Board of Technical Education, which is in charge of administering admission exams, annual exams, and conferring degrees to students who complete their studies. While the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) controls the curriculum for courses relating to pharmacy, this body is equally important in selecting and amending the curriculum for the institution's many engineering divisions.
The entrance exam for first-year admissions was held by the Uttarakhand Board of Technical Education, Roorkee, in May. The academic year at Government Polytechnic Lohaghat starts in July. Pharmacy programs require passing the intermediate science examination, whereas engineering programs require passing the high school examination, notably in science courses and mathematics. Successful completion of the intermediate examination in Hindi or English is necessary for the M.O.M. and S.P. programs. Students are assigned to various colleges based on the results of the entrance exam through centralized state-level counseling, and admission is given after institute-level verification.
Previously, before the creation of the state of Uttarakhand, these exams were held yearly in Lucknow by the Uttar Pradesh Board of Technical Education. These tests are still given annually throughout the transition period even after the Uttarakhand Board of Technical Education was established.
