Established in 1958, the institute initially began as Government Technical Institute. However, in 1964, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) renamed it as Government Polytechnic Kanpur, aiming to standardize the pattern of technical education nationwide. Government Polytechnic Kanpur Nagar holds the approval of AICTE, Government of India, and is affiliated with the Board of Technical Education UP (BTEUP). The college offers a comprehensive range of courses, including Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation & Control, Mechanical Engineering (Automobile), Mechanical Engineering (Production), Textile Chemistry, Textile Technology, Chemical Engineering, Information Technology, Diploma in Paint Technology, Diploma in Plastic Mould Technology, P.G. Diploma in Marketing and Sales Management, P.G. Diploma in Retail Management, P.G. Diploma in Accountancy (with Computerized Accounting and Taxation), P.G. Diploma in Web Designing, P.G. Diploma in Computer Hardware & Networking, and P.G. Diploma in Computer Application. Each course admits 60 students. The college boasts a fully furnished, air-conditioned computer lab equipped with broadband internet and video projection facilities. This facilitates an optimal learning experience for students. Furthermore, Government Polytechnic Kanpur Nagar actively engages in social outreach activities through its student-led unit. These dedicated units consist of 10 students from each branch who promote awareness of social responsibilities among the youth. They organize one-day and ten-day camps in villages, dedicating each day to a specific cause. These causes include general health awareness, AIDS awareness, Pulse Polio Campaign, family planning programs, literacy campaigns, eradication of social evils, pollution control awareness, plantation drives, and advancements in agriculture.
