Government Polytechnic for Women in Jammu was established in 1988 with the aim of providing technical education to female students in the society. Located in Lower Shiv Nagar near AG's office, on the left bank of the historic Ranbir canal, the polytechnic enjoys a serene setting just 2 kilometers away from Jewel Chowk. The institution is easily accessible, with the railway station being 8 kilometers away and the airport only 10 kilometers away.
The polytechnic boasts newly constructed and well-equipped infrastructure, including an administrative block, academic block, hostel block, multipurpose hall, and residential quarters. Further development projects, such as the construction of residential quarters, playfields, and a textile department block, are also in the pipeline, promising an even better learning environment for students in the future.
Currently, the polytechnic offers a range of 3-year diploma programs, all of which are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated with the J&K Board of Technical Education (BOTE). These programs include Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering, Office Management and Computer Applications (OMCA), Textile Designing, and Medical Lab Technology (DMLT), with each course having an intake capacity of 30 students.

In addition to formal diploma programs, the polytechnic has been authorized by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, to uplift rural and urban slum women through non-formal skill development training programs. The institution also offers transfer of technology, technical support services, and other assistance under the CDTP scheme. Short-term job-oriented courses are conducted under the Continuing Education (IRG) scheme, often in collaboration with other government organizations, further enhancing the employability and skill set of students.
