Farook College holds great significance as a symbol of progress and enlightenment for the Muslim community in Kerala. Established in 1948, the college aimed to uplift and empower a community that had suffered under oppressive colonial practices and regressive local attitudes. The Rouzathul Uloom Association, the organization behind the educational complex on the campus, played a key role in reshaping the social landscape of the region by introducing a secular and modern educational framework. The college dedicated itself to serving the economically and socially marginalized sections of society.
During its inception, Farook College was the sole First Grade College in Central Malabar and initially affiliated with Madras University. Following the reorganization of states, the college came under the purview of the University of Kerala in 1957 and later the University of Calicut in 1968. Today, Farook College stands as the largest residential post-graduate institution in the state, offering a wide range of undergraduate and post-graduate programs. It houses eleven recognized research centers that provide Ph.D. programs.
Adopting a residential model, Farook College provides abundant opportunities for both academic and extracurricular activities, aiming for the holistic development of its students. Special attention is given to moral development through religious and spiritual discourses, enabling students to enrich their personal and social identities. The college and its hostels welcome students from all castes and creeds, fostering a harmonious and inclusive atmosphere on campus.
Farook College has received accolades and recognition for its exceptional standards. It has been re-accredited with an A+ grade (CGPA 3.51) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The Government of Kerala awarded the college the R. Sankar Award for the best special grade (Private) college in the state for two consecutive years. The college has been identified by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a college with potential for excellence, being the first college under the University of Calicut to receive such a distinction.
Additionally, Farook College has been honored with the Moulana Abul Kalam Azad Literacy Award by the Moulana Azad Education Foundation, recognizing its efforts in promoting education among educationally disadvantaged minority groups. The college has been granted minority status by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions, Government of India. It achieved autonomous status from the UGC in 2015 and was ranked among the top hundred positions in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in 2020. The college has also received recognition from the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) for its e-learning initiatives, earning the prestigious 'Triple A Grade' and making it one of the top ten colleges in the country in this regard.
Farook College is dedicated to its aim and vision of providing comprehensive development and training to generations of men and women, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and values to contribute effectively to nation-building. The college promotes research and social outreach activities, fosters leadership qualities, and strives for excellence in education and related endeavors to create a better nation and world.
