Dyal Singh College owes its existence to the remarkable philanthropy and visionary thinking of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, the founder of 'The Tribune,' Punjab University, and 'Punjab National Bank.' In his will, drafted in 1895, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia generously bequeathed his vast wealth to establish an Education Trust for the establishment of a truly secular college. Thus, in 1910, Dyal Singh College came into being in Lahore.
Following the partition of India, Dyal Singh College was established in Karnal, and in 1952, another branch was set up in Delhi. The college commenced its operations in the capital at Rouse Avenue as a constituent college of the University of Delhi on August 5, 1959. Subsequently, it relocated to its present location on October 16, 1962. From 1963 to 1967, the college functioned in two units, accommodating students from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. In 1978, the University of Delhi took over Dyal Singh College as a university-maintained institution.
