Established on 1st December 1985, Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, stands as a testament to the visionary outlook of the first Chief Minister, Late Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar. The university's fundamental goal is to advance education, research, and extension education in the domains of Horticulture, Forestry, and associated fields. The university emerged from the legacy of the Himachal Agricultural College, Solan, founded in 1962 and affiliated with Panjab University. Over the years, it evolved into a significant institution, ultimately becoming the sole university in India entirely devoted to the teaching, research, and extension of Horticulture and Forestry.
Driven by the belief that Horticulture and Forestry could profoundly impact the state's economy, the university's roots can be traced to the agricultural complex of Himachal Pradesh University, later maturing into the Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya in 1978. Eventually, in 1985, the institution was conferred the status of a State University, consolidating its focus on these specialized fields.
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Nauni, Solan District, Himachal Pradesh, the university campus sits at an elevation of 1300 meters above sea level. It's situated merely 13 km from Solan town on Solan-Rajgarh Road and is well-connected by road, rail, and bus services.
The university is structured around four constituent colleges. Two of these are located at the main campus in Nauni, each specializing in Horticulture and Forestry, featuring 9 and 7 departments, respectively. The third college, the College of Horticulture & Forestry, is situated at Neri in Hamirpur District. This college offers three Undergraduate Degree Programs - BSc (Hons.) Horticulture, BSc (Hons.) Forestry, and B. Tech. Biotechnology, along with MSc programs in select subjects. The fourth college, College of Horticulture and Forestry in Thunag (Mandi), offers BSc (Hons.) Horticulture and BSc (Hons.) Forestry degree programs. The university's educational network is further fortified by five Regional Research Stations, 12 Satellite Stations, and five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) spread across various zones of the state.
Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry remains committed to its founding principles, advancing agricultural knowledge, and empowering students and farmers alike to excel in the critical domains of Horticulture and Forestry, ultimately contributing to the growth and prosperity of Himachal Pradesh and beyond.
