In the year 1987, a significant shift occurred in the perception of law as a career. The establishment of the National Law School in Bangalore marked this transformation, elevating law from one of the less attractive career paths to becoming one of the most coveted options. This change brought a renewed sense of hope to the legal community. The idea of a national institution acting as a trailblazer and experimental ground for innovative legal education emerged before the Bar Council of India. This concept was born out of the Council's responsibility to uphold standards in professional legal education under the Advocates Act.
The year 2005 saw the birth of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (RMLNLU), a momentous event in legal education. Born from the conversion of Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, a state agricultural university, RMLNLU emerged as a beacon of progress. Established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh through U.P. Act No.28 of 2005, it continues the legacy of the first National Law School by expanding its jurisdiction and responsibilities in teaching, research, and extension in the realm of agriculture and allied sciences, with a special focus on Bihar.
Comprising eight colleges, including Tirhut College of Agriculture, PG College of Agriculture, and College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, RMLNLU offers a comprehensive array of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. The institution's academic prowess is enhanced by a distinguished faculty who blend academic expertise with practical experience. As a multicampus university with campuses in Pusa, Dholi, and Piprakothi, RMLNLU covers a wide expanse of 2063 acres, hosting research stations, KVKs, and advanced centers.
Underlying its commitment to modernization is the preservation of its legacy. The campus showcases this through the maintenance of historical bungalows, reflecting an imperial touch. RMLNLU embraces both tradition and innovation to shape graduates who not only excel technically but are also guided by values.
The university's research endeavors have borne fruit, releasing various crop varieties and contributing to technology development. It has initiated collaborations and centers of excellence, leading research in areas like water management, climate change, food processing, and more. Transforming waste into wealth, the university generates revenue through products like herbal gulal, mushroom items, and mosquito repellents.
As RMLNLU aligns with the National Education Policy, it introduces certificate courses and PG diploma programs to groom industry-ready individuals. Its continuous pursuit of excellence has earned it recognition and accolades, solidifying its position as a leader in legal education. In a world evolving rapidly, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University remains committed to imparting not just technical education but holistic value-based learning to its students.
