Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU), founded in 1994 and named in honor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, a prominent Indian political leader and the visionary behind the Indian Constitution, stands as the seventh Open University to be established in India. The university's headquarters are situated in Ahmedabad, and it has extended its presence through 7 Regional Centers across Gujarat, along with over 270 study centers. Its jurisdiction encompasses the entire state of Gujarat, and it embraces an inclusive approach, welcoming individuals from all walks of life regardless of social classes, castes, creeds, religions, or genders.
BAOU adopts modern communication technologies to primarily deliver its courses through online and distance learning methodologies, bridging the gap for those who might not have the opportunity to pursue education through conventional brick-and-mortar institutions. Its core objectives encompass the advancement and wide dissemination of knowledge, especially via diverse communication avenues, making higher education accessible to a diverse demographic, augmenting the educational well-being of the community at large, and seamlessly incorporating the concept of Open University and distance education into the educational landscape of the state.

BAOU has won the "Best ICT Enabled University 2015" award in ICT4SD conference and awards. "Award of Honor" for achievement as Open and Distance Learning Administrator declared on the occasion of 24th IDEA National Conference on Emerging Perspectives of Open and Distance Learning held on 17-18 July, 2020 Organized by University of Mumbai, Indian Distance Education Association and Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia.
