Soon after independence a group of visionaries led by Professor V.K.R.V. Rao, received support from the former Prime Minister Pt. P.T. The vision of creating a centre for advanced learning and research on social sciences that was comparable to the world's best, worthy of an independent subcontinent, has driven Jawahar Lal Nehru. Thus, in 1948, Delhi's Economics School was set up on the lines of an economics school in London. A process to set up four new departments, including Sociology, Geography, Business Management and Commerce, was subsequently started as Professor Rao became Vice Chancellor of the University. The School, guided by the vision of its founders, attaches greatest importance to teaching excellence both as an end and a basis for creativity and continuing research excellence.
The social and economic development of this country has been aided by the pioneering works of persons such as Amartya Sen, B.N. Ganguly, Prof. Jagdy Bhagwati, K.N. Raj, Manmohan Singh, Professor P.K.Gorshisand & C. Gupta. The DSE tradition of exploring new frontiers of knowledge and innovation in academia has been adopted by the Department of Commerce, which was formally established as a separate entity in 1967.
In over 50 years, they have redefined commercial education in this country and have become a prestigious institution. The Faculty has a legitimate claim and is proud to be India's leading institution in curriculum development, teaching and research in the commercial sector. The Department of Commerce's rapid growth is reflected in its expansion and the novelty of its academic programs. As a result, in addition to the traditional master's and doctoral degrees, training for professional programmers at the master's level is now available. And its flagship product, M.Com. program.
In response to market demand, the Department of Commerce came out with two new graduate professional programs in 1995: the Master of International Business (MIB) and the Master of Human Resources and Organizational Development (MHROD). In a short period of more than ten years, these courses have left their mark through teaching and research in all the current areas of international business and human resource management.
