About College of Veterinary & Animal Science

On August 16, 1954, the College of Veterinary and Animal Science in Bikaner began operations. The college's grounds include an area of 200 hectares and are located on the former Ganga Avenue, near Lalgarh Palace. The college has well-equipped laboratories, a sufficient number of classrooms, stores, poultry, emu, and livestock housing, a workshop, auditorium, NCC wing, guest house, faculty house, bank, horizontally spread departments, clinical facilities, library, computer lab, canteen, and 1 GBPS internet access. The College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Bikaner is set on a huge lush green campus stretched over 200 acres under the ancient Ganga Avenue, which also houses Bijey Bhawan, the then State Museum, and the State Library. Since its inception in 1954, it has grown horizontally to include 17 departments with laboratories equipped with sophisticated instruments and gadgets; a well-developed library with >30,000 books and journals; a workshop with 2 tube wells and 6 vehicles; an examination hall with a capacity of >200 students; a clinical complex with indoors, outdoors, dormitory, and outpatient departments of major clinical departments; and an apex centre for animal disease diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. Students have great facilities, including 5 boys' dorms, 2 girls' hostels, a large restaurant, and a library and an elegant auditorium. The college provides several student and faculty benefits. The college's staff colonies contain 92 quarters for all cadres. Within the campus, there are several playgrounds such as football, hockey, basketball, tennis, volleyball, kabaddi, badminton, TT, pavilion, and so on. Furthermore, one indoor facility for TT and badminton, as well as Dr. Karani Singh Stadium, are located across the street. On campus, heritage buildings blend well with newer structures. The campus has a bank and a post office, both of which are linked to the campus. The institution offers postgraduate studies in 15 subjects and doctorate programmes in 11 fields. Currently, 19 research schemes in several fields of the college of veterinary and animal science are in operation. Aside from that, the institution has a farmland of around 7500 acres at Kodamdesar (25 km distant) with well-built infrastructure for sheep and goats. Following the passage of IGNP tributaries through the farmland, this land is anticipated to be used for fodder and agricultural production in the near future. The site also houses the Directorate of Research (Veterinary and Animal Science). Lt. Col. A.C. Aggarwala, a well-known veterinarian and administrator, was the first and founding Principal. The institution was then formed and developed by Dr. Mohan Singh, who served as Principal from 1960 to 1962 and Dean from 1962 to 1984. During his 24-year tenure, the institution received several honours and was recognised as a renowned institute of veterinary education. Dr. Barner, Greys, and other world-renowned experts visited this college and stayed for months or years to promote the faculty as well as veterinary and animal science. This college's teachers and graduates have held national and international positions, including Drs. B.K. Soni, N.R. Bhasin (IAS), A.L. Chaudhary, O.N. Kunjuru, J.S. Bhatia, Khare, P.K. Mathur, Bhanu P. Chaudhary, V.D. Purohit, S.S. Rathore, R.S. Rathore, P.. K. Dwarkanathan, etc. CVAS is brimming with personal talent. Our professors and researchers compete with others from across the world. In the state of Rajasthan, the faculty of this institution are interested in teaching, research, and extension in the subjects of veterinary and animal science, dairying, fisheries, and related sciences. It has 74 faculty members, 31 of them are Professors, 05 Associate Professors, and 38 Assistant Professors. The research's goals and objectives are to boost total livestock output and to improve the living conditions of the poor. Breed development projects employing superior germplasm, livestock feed and fodder production, animal health care, nutrition, and management issues are the key activities and programmes. Various livestock development initiatives are based on sound and cutting-edge scientific techniques to increase animal output. The Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Bikaner, is assisting the state government in the creation of superior bulls and the improvement of indigenous cows by supplying superior germplasm and/or technology.
