The Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical School, the forerunner of COEP, was founded in July 1854 with the intention of offering the Public Works Department's subordinate officials the appropriate education. Three tiny detached buildings were used for instructional purposes at the school, which was located in Bhawani Peth, Poona. A separate house served as the principal's residence.
Mr. Theodore Cooke, M.A., who held that position for 28 years, was named Principal in June 1865. On August 5th, 1865, His Excellency the Governor, Sir Bartle Frere, laid the cornerstone for the new institution.
In 1866, the college joined the University of Bombay. The College relocated to the New Buildings in 1868. Three departments made up the college for matriculated students.

Both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, the experience of our students is significantly enhanced by the faculty's research efforts. A dimension of experience that cannot be replicated in the classroom is added to undergraduate education by offering research opportunities to an ever-growing number of undergraduate students.
