CHRIST (Deemed to be University) has its roots in the educational vision of St Kuriakose Elias Chavara, a nineteenth-century social reformer and educationalist. In 1831, he founded the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), India's first Catholic indigenous congregation. CHRIST (Deemed to be University) is currently administered by the CMI congregation.
The college, originally known as Christ College, was formed in 1969 and rapidly became noted for its pioneering efforts in Indian higher education.
It pioneered creative and modern curricula, emphasised academic discipline, and emphasised comprehensive education. With the help of its dedicated faculty, the university also adopted global higher education practises.
The faculty members are specialists in their professions and are dedicated to efficiently conveying knowledge. Christ College was granted autonomy by India's University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2004, recognising its commitment to academic achievement. It was designated as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006.
Following that, in 2008, the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India declared the institution a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, renaming it Christ University.
Christ University has been recognised for its quality and has gained National Assessment and certification Council (NAAC) certification in 1998, 2004, and 2016. It has continuously received the highest mark of 'A' on the NAAC's 4-point scale.
The university is known for its strong focus on academics and holistic development of its students. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in fields such as arts, science, commerce, management, social sciences, law, and engineering.
