In order to meet the demands of higher education in western Uttar Pradesh, Chaudhary Charan Singh University (formerly known as Meerut University) was founded in 1965. In 1991, the university commemorated its silver anniversary. Currently, it is one of the top educational institutions in the nation, with a 222-acre campus that is large, beautiful, and pollution-free, with a Gymnasium, Indoor Stadium, well-equipped Library, Hostels for both girls and boys, Administrative Block, Spacious Auditorium, Guest House, Community Centre, and a Rose Garden with a life-size statue of the late Prime Minister Ch. Charan Singh. There are large buildings housing the teaching departments of the several faculties.
The university also includes a distinct engineering college that offers programmes leading to the B.Tech degree in a number of different engineering specialties.
The M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes were initially launched in 1969, with the university claiming to be the first in the nation to do so. With the modernised curricula, postgraduate level courses were also offered in 1973. The University has been developing steadily ever since. Introduction of self-financed courses keeping up with the shifting social demands as well as for the development of human resources were envisaged during the VIII five-year plan. Currently, the campus has five faculties running 35 courses that are self-financed or career-oriented and 22 UGC-sponsored courses. 109 colleges, 252 professional colleges, and one component college are affiliated to Chaudhary Charan Singh University.
