In the year 1994, it came into existence under the patronage of the Indian Express company, offering an exclusive print course to aspiring journalists. However, a significant turning point occurred in 2000 when Sashi Kumar, an esteemed journalist and media entrepreneur, founded a not-for-profit trust that assumed control of the institution. Under the new management, the institution underwent a transformation, receiving a fresh identity and relocating to the renowned Hindu office premises on Wallajah Road in Chennai. This strategic move not only provided the college with a more prominent and convenient location but also allowed it to build upon the rich journalistic heritage associated with the site. With this shift, the institution commenced a new chapter in its history, embracing its new name and embarking on a journey to shape the future of journalism in India. As time progressed, the Asian College of Journalism continued to grow and expand its facilities. In its quest to offer a conducive learning environment to its students, the college transitioned to a sprawling 80,000 square foot space in Taramani. This state-of-the-art campus houses both the residential and college blocks, both of which boast four stories, accommodating the various academic and residential needs of the students. Currently, the Media Development Foundation, spearheaded by the esteemed chairman Sashi Kumar, assumes the responsibility for the Asian College of Journalism. With his vast experience and vision, Kumar ensures that the institution upholds its commitment to excellence and serves as a nurturing ground for budding journalists. Furthermore, during the initial years following the college's relocation to Chennai, K. Thomas Oommen played a crucial role as the overseer, contributing to the smooth transition and development of the institution.
